Crash Indicator measures the rate of state-reportable crashes the carrier was involved in over the past 24 months, severity-weighted.

How to clean it up

  • FMCSA's crash BASIC counts crashes where the commercial vehicle was towed from the scene, someone was injured, or there was a fatality; in the past 24 months.
  • At-fault determination is not FMCSA's standard; any qualifying crash counts, regardless of fault. Dispute causation via DataQs if police report attributes fault to the other party.
  • Crash Indicator is weighted: fatal and injury crashes carry more weight than tow-only events; invest in driver training for adverse-weather and urban operations first.
  • A carrier with 3+ crashes per 100 inspections typically receives a Warning Letter within 6 months; 5+ per 100 often triggers a targeted compliance review.
  • Telematics-based coaching (hard-braking alerts, lane-departure warnings) is the most documented intervention that correlates with reduced crash frequency at the fleet level.
